Facilitator: Johanna de Ruyter
Date & Time: TBA July 9:30am – 4:30pm (Please register by 15th July 2010)
Venue: WSCF, Level 4, 146 Marsden St, Parramatta
Cost: Member - $70, Non Member - $150

Motivate teams, build relationships, and harness leadership presence for breakthrough results. Great leadership is built on more than technical competence, knowledge, and drive. Great leaders have developed something more: the ability to connect authentically with the thoughts and feelings of others in order to motivate and inspire them toward a desired outcome. They have developed Leadership Presence. While it may seem that all great leaders were born with an innate charisma and ability to inspire those around them, in fact, leadership presence is a set of skills, both internal and external, that virtually anyone can develop and improve.

The Ariel Group developed Leading with Presence to create the kinds of leaders that people want to work for and clients want to do business with. A two-day, experiential program based on our model for Leadership Presence, Leading with Presence provides participants with the skills and tools to become authentic leaders.

Whether presenting to large groups, facilitating team meetings, or delivering messages one-on-one, effective leaders know they have to connect with individuals on both a rational and an emotional level. Participants in Leading with Presence learn how to make those connections by practicing theater-based techniques that will help them build credibility, establish personal connections, and communicate messages that stick. Exercises, skill practice, and one-on-one coaching help them develop and hone their skills while they explore their own unique personal histories to create and strengthen their individual styles. They leave knowing who they are, what their natural style is, and how they can harness their presence to support organisational leadership effectiveness. The impact is seen back on the job as they communicate effectively, collaborate productively with diverse groups, and build lasting, trust-based relationships with clients and colleagues.

Learning Objectives

  • After completing Leading with Presence, participants will be able to:
  • Improvise and think on their feet with poise and confidence
  • Deliver messages using impactful vocal variety and body language
  • Act and speak flexibly and in the moment
  • Reflect on “crucible moments” that made them the leaders they are
  • Understand their own story and develop their own communication style
  • Sharpen listening and observation skills to project empathy
  • Use storytelling and metaphor to make strategy more succinct, compelling, and engaging

Participants
Leading with Presence is designed for leaders who manage, influence, or advise others daily. It will benefit any leader who provides advice or has influence over others, including direct reports, those at a higher level, and other internal or external clients.

Delivery
Leading with Presence is a two-day course that includes a pre-program assignment, in-classroom exercises, skill practice, and one-on-one coaching. The program is based on The Ariel Group’s proven theater-based learning methodology which draws on the same theater exercises that performers use to create a more compelling presence, build relationships with people and audiences, and convey their messages more vividly and personally. Our facilitator brings a unique combination of theater, business, and education expertise to the classroom, providing an engaging experience and supportive learning environment for trying out new skills and stretching beyond typical comfort zones.

This program is dedicated to helping you develop a set of personalised principles, strategies and skills to both handle, and cope with, people who are difficult. When you don’t handle difficult people appropriately, effectively and efficiently, first time every time, everyone suffers and so too does the organisation as a whole.

The content and process will reflect your particular needs and will in general cover: the 8 categories and 28 types of difficult people and three things they all have in common.

Real Life Scenarios - real scenarios from your own experiences (we will concentrate on how to handle these specific situations); developing a zero tolerance mindset; going from being a victim and a volunteer to being a virtuous victor.

We will cover the nine competencies of dealing with difficult people and;

  • how to help people do their best and help prevent difficult behaviour from occurring;
  • how to proclaim standards, policies and rules so there’s no misunderstanding;
  • how to allow for the complexity of interpersonal communication;
  • how to cater for both similarities and differences in how people think, feel and do; psychological processes and why they matter;
  • how to state the facts of any interaction clearly, succinctly and objectively;
  • identifying transgressions and violations of standards and how to state them clearly;
  • being clear about short and long-term goals for interacting with a difficult person;
  • the honourable/dishonourable v 'upfrontness' framework for describing and analysing communication styles and behaviour;
  • your options for dealing with difficult people and why each is useful in different circumstances; how to document interactions for public scrutiny;
  • how to manage, and make use of, external influences;
  • how to be impeccable and communicate with R.E.A.L. F.L.A.I.R.;
  • how to provide help and direction to specific types of difficult people and how to negotiate with them for a positive outcome;
  • how to state your case clearly, objectively and succinctly;
  • how to use scripts such as I.T.W.Y.M.?, F.E.W. AND F.E.W.E.R.;
  • what to say and what not to say when you need to take a break;
  • how to help your mind and your body help you do the best you can;

  • how to debrief without 'mouthing off';

  • how to get good by practising in a simulated real-world environment using Agent Provocateur Role-Plays so you can deliver personalised strategies in the real world where it counts;
  • how to adapt different strategies when communicating face-to-face, by email and by phone; how to work with people who have specific communication problems.
