Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can expect to live shorter lives than non-Aboriginal and Torres Strait people of Australia up to 17 years was a reason to form a national coalition of 40 organisations to demand equality. Close the Gap coalition started a campaign to improve Indigenous health in 2006. The campaign attracted huge public support and, the Australian Government announced in November 2008 a $1.6 billion commitment over the four years to improve Indigenous health.

CLOSETHEGAP

59.1 % of Aboriginal population of Sydney lives in Western Sydney and there are some projects running under the “CLOSETHEGAP” Program.

Western Sydney Community Forum organised an Update Session on 26th of March in Mt Druitt with many interested workers and community members attending.

The session started with ‘Welcome to Country’ by Uncle Greg Simms.

The first speaker was Gary Highland from Oxfam who provided an excellent overview of the Close the Gap Campaign.

Then Semra Guler provided a very brief summary of funding into the area under Close the Gap.

The second speaker was Indigenous Health Project Officer Jamie Matthews from Wentwest.

The third speaker was Melisa Williams from UWS, the Director of Indigenous Employment and Engagement that provided valuable information about their strategy.

Finally we had Ross Beaton from Community Services who has provided very important information on Blacktown Aboriginal Child & Family Centres and invited people to attend the next consultation in Blacktown.

We are planning to organise annual updates, if you want to be part of yearly Close the Gap Updates in Western Sydney please contact Semra Guler on 9687 6974 or send an e-mail to semrag@wscf.org.au.
